A suspected drunk driver is in custody after reportedly rear-ending a horse-drawn carriage in Galveston. The accident killed one man and injured three others last weekend. The tragic case goes to show that accidents come in all types—and can happen when you least expect it.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the man facing charges was driving a 2006 Infinity G35. He rear-ended the carriage and then attempted to run away from the scene. Also injured in the car accident, was his passenger, who later left the hospital against doctor’s advice.

The carriage riders were tourists, enjoying a vacation and unaware of the impending tragedy. They had left a birthday celebration and were riding back to their hotel.

“This doesn’t happen every day,” said Lieutenant Michael Gray of the Galveston Police Department. “This is the first time I’ve seen anything like this involving a horse-drawn carriage in my 11-1/2 years at the (Galveston Police) Department. We want to remind everyone to don’t drink and drive, and to share the road.”

Even the most unusual of accidents happen from time to time. People can be injured while in their car, obviously, but also while on their bicycle, walking their dog, or working in their yard. So-called “freak accidents” happen, and the results are frequently tragic.

In the case of horse and carriage accidents, as in pedestrian, motorcycle, and bike accidents, there is nothing protecting the passengers from impact. There are no airbags and usually no safety belts. You are completely vulnerable to other drivers in scenarios like this.

Could you avoid auto accidents by avoiding carriages, motorcycles, and bikes? Sure, but who wants to live their life in fear?

Instead, we all make calculated risks each day as we go about our business, taking steps to reduce the chance of an accident and hoping for the best.
