School bus drivers in the Houston area experienced what looked like a bus accident this month. According to CW39 KIAH-TV Houston, the Houston Independent School District staged a mock bus crash to help prepare drivers in case of an actual accident.

Witnesses took part and bodies lay on the ground to simulate the injured. People rushed around in a seeming panic, unsure of what to do.

It looked very real and it’s something that could happen to your child. HISD is preparing its drivers for the worst case scenarios.

Deborah Williams, a HISD Transportation Area Manager said, “For the safety of our children, we want to make sure we’re prepared by any means necessary to get them to and from school and home safely.”

All the movie magic is intended to give bus drivers insight to what could happen in case of disaster, such as an accident or even a terror attack. This exercise is meant to bring that message home.

Bus drivers who were part of the training programs were impressed saying, “It’s more than just seeing a film because you`re actually witnessing it, so I think it’s awesome.”

With thousands of children riding buses every day in the Houston area, parents want to know that the drivers are trained in accident response should the unthinkable happen.

Bus accidents in Texas and elsewhere aren’t all that rare, and depending on where they happen and the rate of speed at which they happen, they can end in serious injuries. The HISD hopes its drivers respond quickly and appropriately if an accident occurs.
