Hunting season is nearly upon us, and many people will take to the Texas countryside in all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). These small vehicles pose a host of risks, and one accident can lead to a lifetime of consequences.

ATVs often weigh hundreds of pounds and are easily tipped. Riding an ATV that tips on you could be a life-threatening accident. Certain factors can make ATV rides especially risky, including multiple passengers, difficult terrain and riding the wrong ATV for your size or age.

The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute has developed a resource at ATVsafety.org that provides tips for riders. Among these are the Golden Rules:

  •   Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves.
  •   Never ride on paved roads except to cross when it is safe and permitted by law. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway.
  •   Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
  •   Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people.
  •   Ride an ATV that’s right for your age.
  •   Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.
  •   Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.

The Institute also suggests riders take a safety course on ATV operation.

Sometimes people, and especially hunters, will climb onto an ATV without knowing how well it has been maintained, or they will get on with another person who doesn’t follow safety precautions. In situations like this, the chances of an accident can be significantly increased.

ATVs can be fun, but like most recreational vehicles, they can be dangerous as well. If you’ve been hurt in an ATV accident in the Houston area and it wasn’t your fault, you should discuss your legal options with a Houston personal injury attorney.
