Over the long Thanksgiving weekend, a horrific crash occurred near Beaumont, Texas. More than 100 cars were involved in the chain reaction accident. According to the Associated Press, two people were killed and 80 were injured in the crash.

The accident happened around 8:45 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. As many people were traveling to see family for the day, there was thick fog in the air, reducing visibility. Like most chain-reaction accidents, it’s likely this one began with one impact and resulted in a multitude of rear-end collisions.

Interstate 10 was closed in both directions for several hours, and there were some lane closures more than 12 hours later.

Denise Richter, with the Acadian Ambulance Service, said that some of the injured people were in critical condition. Though 80 were reported hurt, only 51 were taken to area hospitals.

Multiple-vehicle accidents can be difficult to sort out. But an accident involving 100 cars could be a nightmare for everyone involved.

From a legal and insurance standpoint, the various companies will work to assign blame for the accident. In order for people who were caught in the middle and had no fault in the crash, this could be a lengthy process as attorneys and insurance adjusters work to determine just who is responsible for the impact and resulting injuries.

The chances of being involved in an accident like this are very slim. But multiple-vehicle accidents are not so rare. Typically, they involve three cars. Even then, waiting for investigations to be complete and blame to be accepted (if it is willingly accepted) can be extremely stressful.

When you are hurt in an accident like this, your No. 1 concern is feeling better. If you attempt to “go it alone” with the insurance company, you’ll soon see that having an advocate on your side has its advantages.

The insurance companies are in the business of saving money, and if they can get away with shirking responsibility for their driver’s actions, they often will. But when you have someone looking out for your best interests, this can change.
