Two young boys were killed in an accident that has left investigators scratching their heads. The at-fault driver also died, but his death wasn’t caused by the accident – it resulted from a gunshot wound to the head.

According to KHOU.com, 12-year-old David Barajas and 11-year-old Caleb Barajas were riding in their truck with their mother and sister. The mother, who was driving, was using the truck to push their father’s vehicle, which had run out of gas. A car, driven by 20-year-old Jose Banda, smashed into the truck, pinning it between the two vehicles. Both boys in the truck were killed.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Banda dead with a gunshot wound to the head. They are investigating how the wound was inflicted, as they didn’t recover a weapon from his vehicle.

Bizarre accidents like this one are rare, but they do happen. While most car accidents are pretty cut and dried, some take time to sort out and discover what actually happened.

The investigation stage following an accident can involve a number of parties—including law enforcement and investigators from the insurance companies. All of these parties are tasked with determining how the accident happened and just who was at fault.

In the case of insurance company investigations, they are looking to determine who caused the accident so they can place blame on someone. Sometimes, with so many people investigating the accident, you will get different answers. One investigator could say the accident was clearly caused by driver A, while the other says that driver B contributed to it in some way. This is when the investigation can get particularly stressful for the accident victims.

This particular accident seems pretty clear—Banda was responsible for the actual crash. But could someone else be held responsible for causing it by causing his injuries? This will likely be sorted out between law enforcement and the insurance companies involved. No doubt, the shooter has some level of culpability if they can determine who that shooter was.
