When your vehicle stalls on the train tracks, it doesn’t matter if you’re driving a Prius or a Mack truck, you need to get out of the way. It seems the driver of an 18-wheeler realized this last weekend when his truck was cut in half by a train in Houston, but he escaped uninjured.

According to KHOU, the accident happened in northwest Harris County at Hwy 290 Frontage Road and Telge Road. The truck was carrying an industrial generator for an oil rig. Aerial photos show the trailer of the truck was separated from the cab when it was hit by the train.

The train engineer was hurt and sustained minor injuries, according to the report. He was transferred to North Cypress Hospital following the crash.

Having your vehicle stall on the railroad tracks is a scene out of a nightmare. Sitting behind the wheel and continuing to try and start it will only increase your risk of a serious accident. Instead, exit the vehicle and call for help.

Train accidents are rare. But when they happen, they frequently end in tragedy.

More often than vehicles stalling on the tracks, many accidents occur when someone attempts to go around the crossing arms, or when the crossing arms don’t work at all. While countless safety measures are put in place to prevent such accidents from happening, they still occur.

As a driver, it’s your responsibility to adhere to the laws and safety precautions of crossing railroad tracks. This means, don’t go around the crossing arms and don’t try to outrun a train. The risks are simply too high.

If you live in a town where train traffic is a regular thing, you know that sometimes you just have to be patient. Sometimes trains come at the most inopportune times—when you are running late for work, for instance. But, trying to beat the train or rush around the crossing arms is a sure recipe for disaster.
