A Greyhound bus and a car crashed outside of Dallas this week. And while this is the most recent bus accident, there have been several others over the past year or so. While many people think of buses as a safe and alternative to driving, their safety isn’t guaranteed and accidents have the potential to turn tragic.

According to KHOU, the passengers in this particular accident were fortunate in that no one was killed. However, seven people were transported to local hospitals as a precaution and three were treated for injuries at the scene.

It isn’t clear what happened in this accident or who caused it. But, one thing is certain—the passengers on the bus were innocent victims.

The American Bus Association says that bus travel has been on the rise over the past several years. With gas prices high and more Americans experiencing financial strife, bus travel offers a budget-friendly alternative to driving your own car or buying a plane ticket. But, the potential costs are more than financial.

Over the past two years, there have been numerous reports of serious bus accidents—with one killing more than a dozen people on I-95 outside of NYC last spring when a drowsy bus driver lost control. Other similar crashes have got the attention of federal officials who say bus safety needs to be a top priority.

“These crashes really pointed out to us that we needed to focus like a laser beam on these bus companies to make sure the buses are safe, mechanically okay, and the bus drivers are well rested and properly licensed,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

As a result, they cracked down, shutting down 26 bus companies in May of last year.

Inspections have gotten more common and investigations into complaints are getting much more attention as a result. Bus companies are on their toes, so to speak, being cautious about who they hire, the regulations they follow, and how they care for their passengers, employers, and the buses themselves.

Still, when you are a passenger on a bus, you put your safety in the hands of the bus driver and the company they work for. If tragedy strikes, someone must be held accountable.
