Summertime isn’t the only time that motorcycles are on Houston streets. A nice winter day can bring them out of the woodwork, and increase the chances of a tragic accident. According to ABC 13, a motorcyclist was killed recently on the Same Houston Tollway when an SUV struck him.

Officials say the motorcycle and SUV were both in the two left-turn lanes to turn from the Tollway onto Bohemme. The SUV skidded straight on the wet road and hit the cyclist. The motorcycle was pinned beneath the SUV and its rider died on the scene.

As a motorcyclist, you have to take safety precautions enough for yourself and all of the other drivers on the road. If you are involved in an accident, the stakes are much higher and you are far more likely to suffer a serious and even life-threatening injury as a result.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers a wealth of useful information on staying safe while on two wheels. Among their Quick Tips are such things as:

  • Remember that vehicle drivers may have a hard time seeing you
  • Wear protective clothing with reflective strips to protect you and remain visible
  • Flash your brake light when slowing down to alert other drivers that you are planning to stop
  • Don’t be afraid to use your horn
  • Make sure your headlight is always on
  • Give other motorists plenty of space and time to react
  • Ride where you are most visible
  • Watch for turning vehicles
  • Avoid aggressive driving
  • Always follow the laws of the road
  • Get training and take safety courses

When you make the decision to ride, you take on a serious responsibility. Motorcycles can be dangerous. But, they can also be fun. Learning how to balance this excitement with safety is crucial in ensuring you live to ride another day.

Not only do you have to be a careful and conscientious driver, you have to be aware for other drivers too. If they can’t see you or if they are distracted, it could be your undoing.

When you’ve done everything you can to be safe and someone else causes an accident, the results can be life-changing. Fortunately, you have legal options.
