Missouri City has some people up in arms about one way the city is hoping to fill in budgetary gaps. Beginning March 1, the city will charge a fee for having emergency responders come out to car accidents. Because citizens feel that their existing taxes already cover this, they are understandably a little upset about the change.

According to KHOU, the tax will range anywhere from $500 to $2,000 depending on the severity of the accident. The added cost will be billed directly to the insurance company of the person who caused the wreck.

“I don’t think they’re going to see much differences in our services or their cost that’s out of pocket,” said Fire Chief Russell Sander.

But the people of Missouri aren’t convinced and are understandably confused. What if the other driver is uninsured? What if the insurance company denies the added fee?

“Don’t we pay them to do that already?” asked one concerned citizen.

The Fire Chief says that no one will get a bill in the mail. He says that citizens won’t even be aware that the transaction is taking place, as it will all be done through the auto insurance company.

Officials estimate the new tax could bring in about $50,000 per year, helping to make up for budget shortfalls.

When you’re involved in an accident, the driver who is at fault is left with the majority of expenses. Through their insurance company, they can be forced to pay for vehicle damages, any damages to city property (light posts, etc.) and your injuries. This just adds one more fee for insurance companies to pore over and criticize.

Following an accident, when the insurance company is left with claims, whether for property damage or bodily injury, they will do their best to find a reason not to pay. If, for instance, they believe their driver was not at fault or that you somehow contributed to the accident, they may try to deny all or part of your claim.

Insurance adjusters may try to minimize your injuries or the damage caused by the accident, warn you from seeking too much medical treatment, or be downright rude. They are trying to save their company money. And when their “business as usual” stands in the way of your making a full recovery, you might want a local personal injury lawyer on your side.
