When a school bus is involved in an accident, many lives are at stake. Because of the design of buses, however, it’s usually the person who hits the bus that is in the greatest danger. Still, bus passengers risk serious injuries every time they put their lives in the hands of a bus driver.

According to CBS Houston, a Houston Independent School bus was involved in an accident with a sedan Friday morning. The bus was carrying students from Scarborough High School at about 6:30 a.m. when the driver of a small sedan collided with it and was killed. One female student was transported to the hospital for injuries. Two students were treated at the scene.

It isn’t clear just how the car accident happened, and the Houston Police Department is investigating the case. As is standard procedure in accidents like this, the bus driver has been removed from duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

When your child rides a bus, you likely wonder quite often about the driving skills of the bus driver. Though the school system does what they can to ensure the drivers are as safe as possible, even good drivers end up having accidents. And when you put your child on a bus twice a day, you are putting a lot of faith in the person behind the wheel.

Fortunately, school buses are designed to withstand auto accidents with little damage to themselves or the people on board. They aren’t huge and yellow just for aesthetics; their design is largely based in safety concerns.

When a bus is hit, your child is protected by the seat in front of them as well as the design of the seats themselves. Also, the elevation of the bus can help to reduce the impact on passengers. As for the driver of the car who collides with a bus—he or she is at a far greater risk of being seriously hurt or even killed.
