Whether you are in the roofing business, work in commercial construction, or are a residential carpenter, the risks are ever-present. There are things you can do to avoid injury and keep yourself safe. But even then, you also have to depend on the safety practices of both your coworkers and your employer.

A Houston construction worker was killed recently when a coworker struck him with a piece of heavy machinery, believed to be a Bobcat or forklift, according to the Houston Chronicle. No doubt the coworker was distraught following the accident, but the accident could have been prevented.

According to the Chronicle, the operator of the heavy machinery was using it to move trash when he backed up and hit his coworker, who died at the scene.

Heavy equipment like this is very dangerous. Even smaller Bobcats and similar vehicles can be deadly when not used correctly. Reports indicate the men were working in the dark with no extra lighting. It’s likely that this played a role in the tragic construction accident, though the investigation is ongoing.

Proper lighting, proper safety equipment, and a vehicle that sounds an alert when operating in reverse, are just a few of the things that may have prevented this accident as they do other, similar accidents.

OSHA is just one source of information on proper forklift and equipment safety. But employers have to play an enforcement role among their workers, ensuring the correct safety practices are being used at all times. In other words, several people are responsible for a safe worksite, not just operators of heavy machinery or the guys on the ground.

As a construction worker, you may practice all of the safety requirements in an effort to ensure you go home after your shift in the same condition you arrived in. Still, you must rely on others as well. If coworkers cut corners or if your employer doesn’t provide proper safety equipment, for example, your personal safety practices may not be enough to prevent an accident.
