20-injured-in-escalator-accident-imageWhen you are at a business conference, staying in a hotel, or attending a major sporting event, the last thing on your mind is escalator safety. That’s the sort of thing you assume someone else will be thinking of. So, when an injury accident happens, it can catch everyone off guard.

Such was the case this past week at the Henry B. Gonzalez Center in San Antonio. There, more than 2,500 employees of the DISH Network company were attending a summit and had just finished lunch. As many of them were ascending the escalator, the electric stairs malfunctioned.

According to KVUE, the escalator stopped abruptly and began moving in the opposite direction, causing people to fall on top of one another. In all, more than 20 people were injured, 14 severely enough to warrant transport to the hospital. Their injuries varied from serious to moderate.

According to a spokesman for the convention center, the equipment had been properly maintained and all inspections were current. Though they aren’t yet sure what caused the problem, this isn’t the first such incident at the locale. Just last year, several people were injured when the very same escalator malfunctioned during a GameStop conference.

“Kone, the HBGCC elevator/escalator maintenance contractor, was on site during the incident, as is normal procedure during large conventions,” the conference center said in a written statement. “Kone is currently evaluating and inspecting the affected escalator. All inspections required for elevator/escalator operations are current, and the affected escalator will not be returned to service until fully inspected by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.”

The accident happened at about 1 p.m., and the local fire departments sent at least 14 units to respond to the call.

Accidents like this one happen without warning. They are so unusual that people rarely anticipate them and certainly don’t plan for them. So, when you suffer a serious personal injury like this one, the potential for both physical injury and mental trauma is great.

When you are hurt in an accident that isn’t your fault—one where the blame can be placed on a property or business owner–you shouldn’t be left with the bill.
