Motorcycle-Deaths-on-Rise-in-US-Declining-in-Texas-ImageMany people use the warmer weather to uncover their motorcycles and save a bit of gas money as they enjoy the summer. But with motorcycle riding comes great risks, as an accident involving a “bike” is far more likely to cause death or injury than one involving a four-wheeled, airbag-equipped vehicle.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA) recently released a general report on the status of motorcycle fatalities and safety. According to the report, fatalities increased by approximately 9% in 2012, to more than 5,000. In some states, the increase was as much as 32%.

In 34 states, fatalities were up. In Texas and 15 other states, motorcycle fatalities decreased. The report states that the number of motorcycle fatalities in Texas fell by 34 in 2012 when compared with data from 2011.

Officials with the GHSA have found a link between the number of serious motorcycle accidents and the price of gas. As gas prices increase, so too do the number of motorcycle registrations and accidents. People apparently don’t just use motorcycles for fun. They use them as a gas-friendly mode of regular transportation.

More bikes on the roads mean more accidents, so the GHSA makes several recommendations to keep people safer.

Their recommendations begin with advising everyone, no matter their state laws, to wear helmets whenever riding on a motorcycle. “Helmets are proven to be 37% effective at preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle operators and 41% effective for passengers,” the GHSA indicates.

Also, they say, motorcyclists need to reduce their speed. In 35% of fatal motorcycle accidents, the cyclist was speeding. Nearly half of these accidents didn’t even involve another vehicle.

Additional recommendations include ensuring proper licensing, providing motorcycle training, reducing alcohol impairment, and educating vehicle motorists on the importance of sharing the road with motorcycles.

When you ride a motorcycle, you are vulnerable to every other driver on the road, no matter what they are driving.
