TxDOT-Rolls-Out-Work-Zone-Accident-Prevention-Methods-ImageWhen traffic slows down on the freeway, everyone better pay attention. Work zones and traffic backups are a common cause of serious car accidents. To lessen the number of serious car accidents that happen in these zones, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is rolling out some new methods of work zone accident prevention.

According to a press release from the agency, there were close to 17,000 work zone car crashes in Texas last year. The work zone accidents resulted in 132 deaths and many more injuries. So far in 2013, there have been 4,713 such accidents and 24 fatalities.

Reducing work zone accidents is a matter of keeping drivers alert and warning them about upcoming slow-downs. TxDOT is attempting to utilize both of these methods to prevent accidents.

First, they are using something known as the End-of-Queue Warning System. The system reads the speeds of oncoming drivers and uses portable signs to warn them of upcoming slowdowns and traffic backups. These will be especially helpful for work zones that operate at night.

The state also plans to use temporary rumble strips placed between the sensors to alert drivers and slow them down. The strips are being placed along I-35 to test them because it is a major corridor and they stand to have the biggest impact there.

“We’re proud to unveil this innovative, new safety technology and are hopeful we can expand the system in other areas of the state,” said TxDOT executive director Phil Wilson. “This technology represents the future of roadway safety as it uses a comprehensive approach to warn drivers of traffic backups, thereby decreasing the likelihood they will enter a work zone at an unsafe speed. Any technology that has the potential to simultaneously protect motorists and roadside maintenance workers is well worth pursuing.”

The I-35 expansion project will widen the highway through Central Texas from four to six lanes. Using these new accident prevention methods will give the TxDOT the information it needs to determine if expanding their use throughout the state would be worthwhile. If it prevents any serious injury accidents or fatal crashes, it will be worthwhile.
