Major-Big-Rig-Spill-Closes-West-Loop-ImageIn no other country on earth do 18-wheelers cover so much ground, carrying goods from warehouses to stores, car lots, and more. And while these vehicles are necessary for our country’s commerce, they also represent a risk on American roads. A recent accident on Houston’s West Loop illustrates just how dangerous these trucks can be—even when they don’t collide with another vehicle.

According to CBS Houston the accident occurred just after 6 a.m. on the Southwest Freeway exit ramp. As a result, rush hour traffic was brought to a screeching halt. Westpark Drive was closed in both directions as was the West Loop, putting a dent in many people’s mornings.

The accident happened when the driver apparently lost control of his truck. The truck overturned, spilling methyl alcohol all over the roads. Fortunately no one else was involved in the accident.

With all the delays caused by a single big-rig accident, it’s a wonder no additional accidents happened. Often, such rush hour traffic delays cause further collisions, creating a chain-reaction accident.

When sharing the road with truckers, it’s important to give them the respect and space they need. Remember these trucks can’t stop as quickly as you, neither can they turn as quickly or sharply.

Truck drivers are trained in defensive driving and how to avoid accidents. But, they are human too and are vulnerable to the same things that car drivers are. From distractions to speeding, truck drivers aren’t immune to causing accidents.

The difference between a distracted car driver and a distracted trucker is the size of their load. While all accidents have the potential to be serious and even deadly, truck accidents are particularly bad simply because of the size of the vehicle.
