Houston-Bus-Accidents-What-You-Should-Know-ImageBuses are made to withstand considerable impact. Often, when a bus accident happens, passengers are left unscathed thanks to their design and safety features. However, this isn’t always the case. In some instances, a bus accident can leave an unsuspecting passenger with lasting injuries and long-term consequences. When this happens, you need to know your rights and your options within the legal system.

In Houston, Metro buses carry people to and from work every day. For city residents, the system of buses can provide transportation for employment, recreation, and necessity. And while most of these journeys end unremarkably, sometimes accidents happen.

Recently, a Houston bus accident resulted in three injuries. According to the Houston Chronicle, the city bus was hit by another vehicle in the 1100 block of Tidwell. The bus stopped, and another vehicle stopped behind it. A third vehicle attempted to squeeze between the bus and the one behind it, striking the bus on its side.

Though the bus only received minor damage, three passengers were taken to area hospitals with unknown injuries.

Like city buses, school buses around the city are also at risk of being involved in accidents. The Chronicle reports a recent accident involving a school bus carrying the girls’ track team from Kingwood High School. In that accident, the driver allegedly lost consciousness and subsequently lost control of the bus, veering into the shoulder. The bus driver and two passengers were taken to area hospitals.

Whether you ride a city bus or put your child on a school bus, you need to know that accidents can and do happen. When these accidents occur, someone can be held responsible.

Though buses are designed to withstand impact and minimize the risk of serious injury, injuries are still common when accidents occur. Ensuring the bus is in good working order and has the proper safety mechanisms in place is the responsibility of the owner—whether this is the city, the school system, or a charter company. When these safety features are lacking or when poor bus maintenance results in an accident, the company can be held responsible. Likewise, if the bus driver causes an accident, his or her employer can be made to compensate accident victims.

As a bus passenger, you should be protected. When you are not, you have legal options.
