commuter-traffic-imageIf you commute to work every day, no one has to tell you it can be a frustrating and even dangerous drive. Some mornings are certainly worse than others, and what starts out as a normal workday can turn into a several-hours-long delay when auto accidents occur. For many commuters, the morning of August 7 was just that.

Two separate accidents on I-45 North snarled morning traffic for hours that day, no doubt making people late and maybe even causing a few additional fender benders.

According to CBS Houston, the first accident happened around 4 a.m. when an 18-wheeler collided with a smaller car. In that accident, one person was killed and all of the main lanes were closed for more than an hour. Even a few hours later, three southbound lanes and two frontage road lanes remained blocked.

The second accident happened around 5 a.m. near the town of Willis. There, southbound lanes were blocked after a single-vehicle truck accident resulted in a fire. No injuries were reported at that accident scene.

Morning commutes can be dangerous, as people who are just getting out of bed are speeding down the freeway at 70, 80, or even 90 miles per hour. Some of these people haven’t had their morning coffee, and some are still getting ready for work while behind the wheel.

Moving with traffic, staying out of the fast lanes unless you are passing, and keeping a safe distance between yourself and other vehicles can help reduce your risk of being involved in a serious accident. But even then, you are still at risk because your safety depends on the safe behavior of other drivers as well.

When you are involved in a serious accident, the driver who is at fault for the crash can be held responsible for your injuries. This means you could be entitled to compensation for your medical costs and pain and suffering, and even for the time you have to miss from work.
