tanker-truck-imageA recent accident in an area outside of Houston sent emergency responders to the hospital after the truck involved leaked its contents.

According to KHOU.com, a tractor trailer collided with a pickup truck on Highway 290. The crash happened at about 9:15 at night, and though it isn’t clear how the accident occurred, the pick-up truck driver was charged with DWI.

Following the collision, the semi-truck overturned in the road, blocking all lanes. The tanker truck was carrying a chemical called Aluminum Sulfide, which spilled onto the road when the tank ruptured. According to officials with the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department, Aluminum Sulfide is corrosive and dangerous when inhaled.

Two Harris County deputies had to be transported to the local hospital after they reported feeling dizzy. People who lived in the surrounding area were told to stay where they were while the truck accident was cleaned up.

Traffic was diverted to a frontage road, and the accident was cleaned up over the next several hours.

Tractor trailers crisscross our nation’s highways carrying everything from cookies to chemicals. If the size of the trucks wasn’t enough to make them moving weapons when involved in an accident, their loads would be.

Though these tankers are designed to withstand an impact without rupturing, this accident on Hwy. 290 is clear evidence that they can.

As with any accident, the person at fault can be held responsible. Whether you are in the other vehicle or if you are in the area when a chemical spill happens, the company or person responsible should be held accountable if their negligence caused the accident.

Your medical bills are only part of the equation—time missed from work can cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars as you recover from an accident.
