rainy-night-driving-imagePoor visibility and wet conditions are probably to blame for an auto accident that happened on the 59/Eastex Freeway near the Beltway.

According to KHOU, the accident happened when an HPD officer stopped to assist two drivers that had been involved in a crash. One car had hydroplaned and struck another vehicle, and there was debris on the roadway. No one was injured in the initial collision.

In an effort to remove debris from the road and eliminate the risk of causing another accident, the police officer entered the roadway. It was then that he was struck.

The at-fault driver hit the patrol car, which was pushed into the officer. Although the officer was said to be in fair condition following the accident, he had broken bones and lost teeth in the collision.

The driver of that vehicle was ticketed for failure to control speed. He told officers that a passing 18-wheeler made it difficult for him to see due to water splashing onto his windshield.

We frequently see injury accidents that happen because of an earlier crash. Perhaps lanes were blocked or wreckage was left in the road. Many times a driver can’t brake fast enough to avoid a secondary collision. When you pair these dangers with low visibility or wet conditions, the risk of additional accidents is further increased.

If you are involved in a car accident, the best thing you can do is to wait for emergency officials to arrive. Do not try and enter the roadway to clear debris or redirect traffic.

A secondary accident can be just as damaging as the initial accident, if not more so, and can add frustration and complications to an already stressful situation.
